(政治)南韓總統拜訪緬甸

這次訪談保安相當嚴密，因為北韓30年前試圖在緬甸暗殺一位南韓前總統。

南韓總統李明博為了到這個東南亞國家進行一場正式的兩天訪談，於週一抵達緬甸。這是自從北韓試圖在將近30年前暗殺一位前總統以後，南韓領袖的首度拜訪。可以理解保安十分嚴密，但是李明博還是有完整的活動方案。週一他會見緬甸總統登盛並且和他共進晚餐。

訪談的原因是要促進兩國之間更緊密的經濟聯繫，並鼓勵緬甸最近的政治改革。李明博預定要和支持民主的領導人翁山蘇姬見面。她上個月當選國會議員，五月初宣誓就職。

南韓企業多年來不斷追求和緬甸進行商業交易。大宇國際公司和韓國天然氣公司2008年與政府簽署協議，將天然氣從若開邦的管道輸入中國。南韓證券交易公司也競相在緬甸成立交易所。

(Politics)South Korean President Visits Myanmar

Security was tight for the visit, as North Korea tried to assassinate a former South Korean president in Myanmar 30 years ago.

South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak arrived in Myanmar on Monday for an official two-day trip to the South East Asian nation. It is the first visit by a South Korean leader since North Korea tried to assassinate a former president almost 30 years ago. Security was understandably tight, but Lee still had a full program of activities. On Monday he held meetings and had dinner with Myanmar President Thein Sein.

The reason for the visit is to promote closer economic ties between the two countries and to encourage the recent political reforms in Myanmar. Lee was scheduled to meet with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. She was elected to the national parliament last month and was sworn in to her position at the start of May.

South Korean companies have been pursuing business deals in Myanmar for years. Daewoo International and the Korea Gas Corporation signed deals with the government in 2008 to pipe natural gas from the state of Rakhine into China. The firm running South Koreas stock exchange is also competing to open an exchange in Myanmar.
